Questions Owner-Operators Should Ask Before Signing On With a Carrier

A practical list of questions to help owner-operators compare carriers and avoid surprises after signing on.

For an owner-operator, choosing a carrier is a business decision. The right fit can make running your truck more predictable. The wrong one can cost you time and money.

The best protection is asking clear questions up front — and getting clear answers in writing.

Pay and settlements

  • How is pay calculated, and how often are settlements paid?
  • What deductions or charges may appear on a settlement, and why?
  • How are accessorial situations, like detention, handled?

Ask for an example settlement if one is available. Seeing the format helps you understand what you'll actually receive.

The agreement itself

  • What are the terms of the lease or contract, and how can either side end it?
  • What does the agreement require from you, and what does the carrier provide?
  • Who handles which permits, registrations, and insurance?

Read the agreement fully before signing, and consider having someone you trust review it with you.

Freight and dispatch

  • What kind of freight and equipment does the carrier run?
  • Will you have a dedicated dispatcher?
  • How does the carrier handle home-time requests?
  • How much say do you have in the loads you run?

Safety and support

  • What are the carrier's expectations around safety and compliance?
  • Who do you call if something goes wrong on the road, day or night?
  • How does the carrier support drivers when the safe choice affects the schedule?

Communication style

Pay attention to how the recruiter answers. Direct answers, willingness to put details in writing, and patience with your questions are good signs. Vague answers deserve follow-up.
